Introduction to Accessibility
Accessibility ensures that digital platforms, including e-commerce and webshops, are usable by people with disabilities. It involves making content: perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust for all users, including those who rely on assistive technologies like screen readers or keyboard navigation.
To align with the European Accessibility Act (EAA) / Barrierefreiheitsstärkungsgesetz (BFSG), bookingkit is committed to making our platform fully accessible by June 28, 2025.
How bookingkit is Ensuring Compliance
bookingkit underwent a third-party accessibility audit to evaluate our webshop against WCAG 2.1 AA standards. Following this audit, we are actively addressing all critical and high-priority issues to ensure full compliance. Our key areas of focus include:
1. Perceivable Content
Ensuring text alternatives (alt text) for images and icons
Improving color contrast for readability (meeting the required 4.5:1 contrast ratio for text and 3:1 for graphical elements)
Supporting text resizing up to 200% without breaking the layout
Ensuring all meaningful content is provided in a format compatible with assistive technologies
2. Operable Navigation & Interaction
Implementing full keyboard navigation (ensuring no mouse is required for interaction)
Fixing keyboard traps to allow smooth navigation across interactive elements
Adding accessible modal window controls so users can close pop-ups with keyboard commands
Providing clear focus indicators for all interactive elements
3. Understandable & Predictable Experience
Standardizing form labels and error messaging to ensure clear instructions for users
Ensuring language settings are accessible via keyboard and assistive technology
Structuring content logically for easy comprehension and navigation
4. Assistive Technology Compatibility
Using ARIA roles and correct semantic HTML structure to improve screen reader support
Implementing accessible time limit warnings, so users get notifications before session timeouts
Enhancing focus order and tab navigation for all interactive elements
Special Consideration: Color Contrast for our Customers
For customers using bookingkit's webshop, it is essential to maintain proper color contrast to meet accessibility standards. We recommend:
A minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for standard text and 3:1 for large text (18px and above)
Avoiding light text on light backgrounds and dark text on dark backgrounds
Ensuring that interactive elements (buttons, links) are distinguishable
Providing an option in the customization panel for selecting color palettes that meet contrast requirements
Including guidance and warnings in the customization interface to help customers maintain compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA
Customers are responsible for maintaining accessibility within their customized storefronts, including adherence to WCAG 2.1 AA contrast guidelines.
